One of the benefits of being a missionary is purging all of our belongings and becoming people of little possessions. Coincidentally, at the same time, one of the drawbacks of being a missionary is purging all of our belongings and becoming people of little possessions. Almost all of us on Team Lima have gone through this process of purging and deciding whether to keep, sell, ship, or trash our stuff. There is something very freeing about this process as we shed the things in life we don’t really need. At the same time, it is scary, sad, and nerve wracking because we are getting rid of the things that have made our home a home for the past five or so years. In a stage in life when most of our peers are building their lives and establishing their home, we, in turn, our taking our homes apart to decide what things are truly important and what things just take up space. In the end, I believe this process reminds us that joy is not found in material things. I can’t help but think about what Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:18 when he writes, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Brian McClaren, one of our team’s favorite authors, adds to Paul when he says, “What we focus on, determines what we are going to miss.” Focusing heavily on material possessions, in many ways, causes us to miss out on the eternal here on earth. As a team, this process of purging is healthy because it has eliminated the chance for us to focus on “our stuff,” but rather focus on the mission that God has placed before us.
